If you are not exhibiting an outbreak of herpes (which can be diagnosed in some instances via a viral culture, or swab of the sores), you ask your doctor or the clinic for the herpes test. Specifically, an IgG “type-specific” herpes blood test, which will diagnose which “type” of herpes you may have–HSV-1 (oral herpes/cold sores), or HSV-2 (genital herpes). Be aware that the HSV-1 (cold sore) can actually be present in the genitals via oral sex–and not on the typical site, which is the lips.

Depending on the doctor/clinic/lab, it can take from 2-10 days to get your results back. You might want to check out the Herpes Handbook for an explanation of the different tests that can be run for herpes.

3 weeks ago 18 y/o daughter presented with dermatitis, blisters, and now scarring of right arm following rain exposure and flu-like symptoms lasting 3 days. Antibiotic cream and steroid cream prescribed at first seemed to exacerbate condition. Burn cream yielded significant improvement. Urinalysis for cesium exposure done (neg) and biopsy of arm performed (inconclusive). I am not convinced that this was not caused by fallout levels in rain…that same day 1230 cpm measured in rainfall 10 miles north of me, high levels to the east the next day…extremely high levels 3 days later in Hamburg, Germany of 5000 cpm from same air.
