Embarrassing Bodies – Sebaceous Naevus case at the dermatologist

Next in the clinic is 12 year old Michael, who has been teased for years about a large birthmark under his chin. Dr Pixie diagnoses the mark as a Sebaceous Naevus, little sebaceous glands, that have a waxy texture and are yellow/orange in colour, that clump together to form a mark on the skin. The condition is most likely to appear on the scalp, but can also be on the ears, neck or face. Dr Pixie is worried that the birthmark will only get bigger as Michael get’s older, and as there is also the risk that tumours can develop, she advises that the mark is removed. Dr Russell Emerson, consultant dermatologist, shaves off the raised areas and after 5 minutes part of the mark is removed. It will take further treatments to remove it fully, but Michael is very happy with the result so far. This new series explores the conditions and ailments that leave many of us a little red-faced and aims to de-stigmatise common complaints.

Embarrassing Bodies – Revisit girl with Atopic Eczema

Last to pay the clinic a revisit was teenager Claudia, who spoke to Dr Dawn about eczema that was destroying her confidence. Unfortunately there is no quick fix for eczema; regular use of an antibiotic cream is the best way to treat the condition. Claudia was referred to expert dermatologist, Dr Sarah Wakelin, who was happy with Claudia’s improvement. This new series explores the conditions and ailments that leave many of us a little red-faced and aims to de-stigmatise common complaints. Three doctors — Dawn Harper, Christian Jessen and Pixie McKenna — will be throwing open the doors of the clinic in a bid to tackle each condition head on, while attempting to take away the sting of shame.
